Omicron-COVID-19 New variant: What is it?
Omicron (B.1.1.529) is a mutated variant of SARS CoV-2 and was first reported from South Africa to WHO on 24 November 2021. Lately, diseases have expanded, corresponding with the revelation of variation B.1.1.529.WHO has mentioned it as a variant of interest (VOI) and Govt. of India has notified it as a variant of concern (VOC).
More mutations and more dangerous than Delta?
- Delta variant was the main reason behind millions of infections and thousands of deaths during the second wave.
- It is said that there are as many 30 spike protein mutations in this new variant. It is not yet possible to comment on whether it is more or less dangerous than earlier delta variant.
Is it more infections than Delta?
- Preliminary finding suggests it is more contagious. However, it needs more time to conclusively comment on that.
Is vaccine less effective against this variant?
- Not yet known. It will take more time to understand whether existing vaccines will be equally effective or not.
Any additional risks for cancer patients?
- Not possible to comment. On a general note, it is advisable to follow all precautionary measures in cancer patients owing to their reduced immunity.
Should cancer patients get vaccinated against COVID -19?
If you have recently received cancer treatment that suppresses the immune system – such as chemotherapy, stem cell or bone marrow transplant, your doctor may suggest that you wait to receive the vaccine until your immune system has recovered.
What should you do to reduce risk of possible transmission of Omicron variant?
Follow Covid appropriate behavior. Avoid going out if not necessary, Wear mask properly, Maintain physical distance of 2 meters, avoid crowded place and gatherings, get vaccinated.
