Know About Lung Cancer

What Is Lung cancer?

Nowadays most of the people are suffering from a disease called Lung cancer. It is a type of cancer that occurs in the lungs and if not treated timely can lead to death. There are very few lung cancer specialists in Delhi out of which Dr. Dodul Mondal tops the list. Further we’ll read about how it happens and what are the major steps that we can take to prevent it from happening, also if it has already happened then what can a person do.

Function Of Lungs

Lungs are sponge-like organs present on both sides of your chest. Taking in oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide are the main functions of your lungs.

When a person breathes in air through the mouth or nose then the air enters into your lungs through trachea.Further the trachea is divided into small tubes called bronchi, which are further divided into smaller tubes called bronchioles. At the end of each bronchioles there are tiny air sacs known as alveoli. The alveoli absorbs all the oxygen into your blood which is present in the inhaled air and removes carbon dioxide from the blood when you exhale. This is how your lungs work.

Bronchi are the major parts of your lungs where the cancer starts taking place. Sometimes it also starts in bronchioles or alveoli.

Types Of Lung cancer

There are mainly 2 types of lung cancer which are treated very differently.
1. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
About 80% to 85% of lung cancers are NSCLC. The main subtypes of NSCLC are adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. This type of lung cancer is generally found in current or former smokers, but it is also the most common type of lung cancer seen in non-smokers also. It is seen that it occurs more in women than in men, and it is more likely to happen in younger people than all other types of lung cancer.
2. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)
About 10% to 15% of all lung cancers are SCLC and it is sometimes called oat cell cancer. This type of lung cancer tends to grow and spread faster than the previous one i.e NSCLC. It is often seen that about 70% of people with SCLC already have cancer that has spread at the time when they are diagnosed. Since this type of cancer grows much quicker than quickly, it tends to respond well to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Unfortunately, for most people, the cancer will return at some point.
